Ctrl+Alt+Arrow Not Working in Windows 11 and 10
If your screen is sideways and Ctrl + Alt + Up Arrow is doing nothing about it, go to Settings → System → Display → Display orientation and choose Landscape. That is the fix, it is identical on Windows 11 and Windows 10, and it needs no driver software. The reason the shortcut is ignoring you is the part almost nobody says out loud: Ctrl+Alt+Arrow was never a Windows shortcut. It came from the Intel graphics driver, Intel removed it from newer integrated graphics, and on an AMD or NVIDIA machine it was never registered by anything in the first place. Nothing on your computer is broken.
A wasted Saturday over a shortcut that did not exist
Jake called on a Saturday morning, which is never a good sign, because Saturday is his busiest day in the phone shop.
A customer had brought in a laptop with the screen rotated ninety degrees. Jake had already fixed that part in about a minute, which he was quietly pleased about. The problem was what happened next: the customer wanted the keyboard shortcut back, because that was how they used to flip the display for reading long documents, and Jake had now spent two hours failing to give it to them.
"I've reinstalled the graphics driver twice," he said. "I've run two of those driver updater things. I've done the registry thing a video told me to do, which I'm now slightly worried about. And it still does nothing."
"What graphics does the laptop have?"
A pause. "Why does that matter?"
"Because the shortcut you're trying to restore isn't part of Windows," Ethan said. "It's part of the Intel graphics driver. If that laptop has an AMD chip in it, you've spent your Saturday trying to repair something that was never installed."
It had an AMD chip in it.
That is the whole problem with this question in one phone call. It looks like a broken Windows feature, so people troubleshoot it like a broken Windows feature — reinstalling, resetting, editing the registry, running utilities they should not run — and none of that can possibly work, because there is nothing there to repair. So before anything else, let us work out which of three quite different situations you are actually in.

Lane 1: put the screen back the right way up
This is the one that always works, on every graphics chip, on both versions of Windows, with nothing to install. If you are reading this on the sideways screen right now, start here and come back for the explanation afterwards.
On Windows 11
Press Windows key + I to open Settings. That is a genuine Windows shortcut, unlike the one that brought you here, and it works even when the screen is rotated and the mouse feels like it is being driven by somebody else.
Then: System → Display. Scroll to Scale & layout, and inside it you will find Display orientation with a drop-down. Choose Landscape.
The four options are Landscape, Portrait, Landscape (flipped) and Portrait (flipped). Landscape is the normal one. Landscape (flipped) is upside down, which is a legitimate setting for a ceiling-mounted projector and is otherwise how people discover this page.
On Windows 10
The same three steps with a slightly different layout: Settings → System → Display, then look under Scale and layout for Display orientation. Same four choices, same behavior.
There is also a faster route on Windows 10 that no longer exists on 11 in the same form: right-click any empty part of the desktop and choose Display settings, which drops you straight onto that page. On Windows 11 the desktop right-click menu is condensed, so the same option is there but the menu around it looks different — and if you are hunting for a familiar option that seems to have vanished, remember that Windows 11 hides the legacy menu behind Show more options, or Shift + F10.
The countdown that catches people out
When you change orientation, Windows applies it straight away and then shows a small dialog asking whether you want to keep the change, with a countdown of about fifteen seconds. If you do not click Keep changes before it runs out, it reverts.
This exists for a good reason. If a setting leaves you unable to see anything, waiting fifteen seconds undoes it without you having to do anything clever. But it means that if you set Landscape, then get distracted, then look back and find the screen sideways again, nothing has gone wrong — the timer simply expired. Set it again and click Keep changes.
The same dialog appears when you change screen resolution, for exactly the same reason, so it is worth recognizing.
With two monitors, choose the screen first
Display orientation applies to one display, the one currently selected. At the top of the Display page there is a diagram with numbered rectangles for each screen. Click the rectangle for the screen that is wrong before you touch the drop-down, otherwise you will faithfully rotate the monitor that was fine.
If you cannot tell which rectangle is which, click Identify underneath the diagram and a large number appears briefly on each screen.
This is also the moment to mention its close cousin, because half the people who arrive here with a display problem actually want the other thing: Windows key + P chooses where the picture goes — this screen, that screen, both, or extended across the two. Why the shortcut stopped working, properly explained
Here is the part that the top search results tend to skip, and it is the part that saves you the wasted Saturday.
It was never a Windows feature
Windows does not ship a keyboard shortcut for rotating the display. It never has. Not in Windows 7, not in 10, not in 11.
What existed instead was this: your graphics driver — the software that lets Windows talk to the graphics chip — was allowed to register its own system-wide keyboard shortcuts. Intel used that ability to add rotation on Ctrl + Alt + the arrow keys. Because the driver was installed on an enormous number of laptops, and because it ran from the moment Windows started, the shortcut behaved exactly like a Windows feature. It was on virtually every office machine for years.
But it belonged to Intel, not to Microsoft. And software that belongs to somebody else can be taken away by somebody else.
What Intel removed, and when
Intel dropped rotation hotkeys from the Intel Graphics Control Panel starting with its 6th-generation integrated graphics. Anything built around that generation or newer arrived without the shortcut. Intel's guidance, and the support documents that laptop makers wrote to match it, all say the same thing: use the display orientation setting in Windows instead.
The reason is not mysterious, and if you have ever watched somebody's screen flip while they were reaching for the arrow keys you have already guessed it. Ctrl and Alt are two of the most-pressed keys on the keyboard. A shortcut sitting on top of them that instantly rotates the entire display, with no confirmation, generated an enormous number of support calls from people who had no idea what they had done or how to undo it. For every person deliberately rotating a screen there were many more doing it by accident.
So the shortcut you are trying to restore is, in large part, the reason people ended up needing this page in the first place.
And then the app itself changed twice
The other half of the confusion is that Intel's control software has been renamed and rebuilt more than once, so guides written a few years apart describe apps that no longer exist.
The old Intel Graphics Control Panel was the one with the classic hotkey manager. It was retired. The Intel Graphics Command Center replaced it, and on hardware that supports it that app carries a System → Hot Keys section where the rotation combinations can be switched back on. More recently Intel has moved again, to Intel Graphics Software, which is now the app receiving updates and which supersedes both the Command Center and the separate Arc Control app.
Three apps, roughly a decade, one feature that quietly did not survive the journey. If a tutorial tells you to open a control panel that is not on your machine, that is why — it is not that something was uninstalled.
🔬 How this was tested
Written and checked on 9 August 2026 on Windows 11 Enterprise, version 24H2, build 26100, with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 and no Intel graphics present. On that machine Ctrl + Alt + Up does precisely nothing, in any app, on the desktop, at any time — which is the expected result and not a fault. Every Settings path in this post was clicked through on that build.
Vendor behavior was checked against Intel's own support material and the laptop-maker documentation that mirrors it, plus NVIDIA and AMD's current rotation controls. Where a claim depends on hardware we could not put hands on — a current Intel laptop that still exposes the Hot Keys section — it is written as conditional rather than stated flatly.
Lane 2: getting the hotkey back, if that is even possible
Short version: this is possible on some Intel graphics, and is not possible at all on AMD or NVIDIA. Five minutes to find out which you are.
First, find out what graphics you have
Everything below depends on this, so do it before anything else. Press Windows key + R, type dxdiag and press Enter. The Run box is the small dialog that lets you launch things by name, and dxdiag is the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, a reporting tool that has shipped with Windows for decades.
Open the Display tab. The Name field says Intel, AMD or NVIDIA. That single word decides everything that follows. There is more on reading that report in our guide to the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and what its tabs mean.
You can get the same answer from Device Manager by expanding Display adapters. Laptops frequently list two entries — an Intel chip built into the processor and a separate NVIDIA or AMD one for games. If you see two, the Intel one is the one that matters for this question, because it is the one driving the built-in screen most of the time.
If it says Intel: the Hot Keys section
Open Intel Graphics Command Center. If it is not installed, it comes from the Microsoft Store, and on newer machines the current app may be Intel Graphics Software instead.
Inside, go to System, then Hot Keys, and turn them on. Where this section exists you can usually also choose the modifier pair, so the rotation combinations can sit on Ctrl + Alt or on Ctrl + Shift. The second option is worth considering precisely because it is harder to trigger by accident.
Two things to know before you go looking:
If there is no Hot Keys section, that is your answer. It is not hidden, it is not behind an update, and it will not appear after a reinstall. The feature is simply not offered on your hardware, and every extra hour spent hunting for it is an hour spent looking for something that is not there.
Turning them on is not always permanent. When a graphics driver is replaced — including automatically, by Windows Update — the setting can revert to off. So "it worked, then one day it did not" usually means a driver was updated underneath you, rather than anything being damaged.
If it says NVIDIA or AMD
Then there is no hotkey to restore, and this is the section that saves you the wasted evening.
Modern NVIDIA drivers do not publish a rotation hotkey. The combination doing nothing on an NVIDIA machine is not a symptom — that is the normal, working state. Rotation itself is available in NVIDIA Control Panel → Display → Rotate display, which does the same job as the Windows setting with a nicer preview.
On AMD, rotation lives in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, under Settings → Display → Rotation. Same story: the control is in the app, not on the keyboard.
Both companies made the same call Intel did. The keyboard is a bad place for a setting that changes everything you can see, in one keystroke, with no undo.

"Alright, but the customer used that shortcut every single day. Am I really telling them it's gone forever and they have to click through Settings like it's homework?"
Mostly, yes — and it is better to say so on Saturday morning than after two hours of reinstalling. If their laptop has Intel graphics with the Hot Keys section, it takes five minutes and they get it back. If it does not, the honest answer is that the feature was retired by the company that made it, and no download changes that. What you can do is pin the Display settings page to their Start menu so it is one click instead of four. That is a real fix. Hunting for a driver that will bring the hotkey back is not, and the downloads that claim otherwise are the ones you least want on a customer's machine.
When the keys do something, just not what you wanted
A smaller group of people arrive here with the opposite complaint: the keys are not dead, they are doing something unexpected. That is a different problem with a different cause.
The look-alike shortcut that really is built in
Windows key + Ctrl + Left or Right switches between virtual desktops. That one is genuinely part of Windows, works on every machine regardless of graphics, and looks superficially similar in a written list of shortcuts.
If you have been pressing that and expecting the picture to rotate, or pressing Ctrl + Alt + arrow and expecting to move between desktops, both are behaving perfectly and neither is the one you want. It is a surprisingly common mix-up, and the same family of confusion shows up when Alt + Tab does not show all your windows — the shortcut is working, it is just answering a different question than the one you had.
Programs that swallow the combination
Some applications claim Ctrl + Alt + arrow for themselves while they have focus. The usual suspects:
- Virtual machine software — VirtualBox, VMware and Hyper-V pass most key combinations through to the guest system, so the keystroke lands inside the virtual machine rather than on your desktop.
- Remote desktop sessions — same principle. Your keystroke is being delivered to the computer at the other end of the connection.
- Code editors and IDEs — several use
Ctrl+Alt+ arrow for their own navigation and column-selection features. - Older screen-rotation utilities — if somebody installed one of these years ago, it may still be running in the background and quietly winning the argument.
The test takes ten seconds: click on an empty part of the desktop so no application has focus, then press the combination. If it works there and not inside a particular program, the program is the one intercepting it, and the setting you need is in that program's own keyboard preferences.
Lane 3: when Windows itself will not rotate
If the Settings route above did not work either, then the problem is no longer about hotkeys at all. There are four common causes, in the order you should check them.
Display orientation is greyed out
Nine times out of ten this means Windows is running on a generic display driver rather than the real one for your graphics chip. Windows ships a basic fallback driver so that you always get a picture, but it is deliberately minimal — and rotation is one of the things it does not offer.
Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. If it says Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, that is your answer. Install the proper driver — from your laptop maker's support page first, or from Intel, AMD or NVIDIA directly — and restart. This state is common after a clean Windows install, after a driver update that failed halfway, and after a system restore.
Rotation lock is greyed out
This one confuses people because it looks like a fault and is not. Rotation lock only exists on devices with an orientation sensor — tablets, convertibles, some touchscreen laptops. On an ordinary desktop or a normal laptop there is no sensor, so there is nothing to lock, so the control is greyed out permanently and correctly.
On a device that does have a sensor and still shows it greyed out, the usual trick is to physically rotate the device once: the control often becomes available as soon as the sensor reports movement. Failing that, check under Sensors in Device Manager, disable the sensor entry and enable it again, which forces it to re-register.
The screen keeps rotating on its own
That is the sensor doing its job on a machine that is being held or tilted. Turn on rotation lock: press Windows key + O, or open the quick settings panel from the taskbar and click the rotation lock button, or set it in Settings → System → Display.
It is worth knowing Windows + O exists. It is a real Windows shortcut, unlike the one that brought you here, and on a convertible laptop that keeps flipping itself while you use it on your lap it is the single most useful key combination on the machine.
The screen goes black, flickers, or rotates halfway
If rotating produces a black screen or a brief flicker and then a return to normal, the driver is crashing and recovering rather than refusing. That is a different failure with its own diagnosis, and it usually points at a driver version that does not agree with your hardware — our post on the display driver has stopped responding and has recovered error walks through it.
One tip that has saved many people a panic: if a rotation leaves you unable to see anything usable, do nothing for fifteen seconds. The countdown will expire on its own and put everything back.
If you genuinely rotate a screen every day
Some people are not chasing nostalgia here. If you read long documents in portrait, write code in portrait, or have a monitor on a pivot stand, four clicks several times a day is a genuine annoyance rather than a trivial one.
The options, honestly ranked:
1. Pin Display settings where you can reach it. Open Settings, go to System, right-click Display and pin it to Start. One click to the right page, no software installed, nothing to break. For most people this is the correct answer and it is faintly disappointing, which is why nobody writes it up.
2. Use your vendor's app if it has a rotation page. NVIDIA Control Panel and AMD Adrenalin both do. It is not faster than Settings, but if the app is already open all day it is fewer steps.
3. A third-party rotation utility. These exist, some are perfectly respectable, and a few can bind rotation to a key combination of your choosing. Understand the trade: you are installing a program that runs constantly and watches every keystroke, in order to save three clicks. On a personal machine that you look after, that can be a reasonable deal. On a work laptop, or a machine you maintain for somebody else, it is usually not — and it is exactly the category of software that ends up abandoned, unsigned and flagged by antivirus two years later.
4. What we would not do: install a driver updater. They are the most common recommendation in search results for this problem and they cannot possibly help, because no driver updater can add a feature the vendor removed from the driver. It is a category error dressed up as a solution.
And the thing nobody says: Windows has no way to build this shortcut yourself. You can attach a key combination to a shortcut file that launches a program, but there is no built-in command for "rotate the display" to point it at. That is a real limit, and pretending otherwise wastes your evening.
One note if this is a Windows 10 machine
Everything above works identically on Windows 10, so nothing here is urgent. But it is worth saying once, plainly, because it affects the graphics drivers this whole page depends on.
Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. It still boots, still activates and still works. What it no longer gets by default is security updates. There is a consumer Extended Security Updates route — enrolled from Settings → Windows Update — and Microsoft extended that program in 2026, so an enrolled machine is covered for a while yet.
The connection to this page is simple: hardware makers gradually stop publishing new drivers for an unsupported system. Why is Ctrl+Alt+Arrow not working in Windows 11?
Because it is not a Windows shortcut. Windows has never published a keyboard shortcut for rotating the screen. Why did my screen rotate by accident in the first place?

Display orientation is greyed out. What now?
That almost always means Windows is running on a basic display driver rather than the real one for your graphics chip, which happens after a fresh install, a failed driver update or a system restore. Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and see what is listed. Microsoft Basic Display Adapter is the tell. Install the proper driver from your laptop maker or from Intel, AMD or NVIDIA, restart, and the orientation control comes back.
How do I stop my screen rotating on its own?
Turn on rotation lock. Press Windows key plus O, or open the quick settings panel from the taskbar and use the rotation lock button, or go to Settings, System, Display and turn on Rotation lock. The setting only appears on devices that have an orientation sensor, so on an ordinary desktop or a non-convertible laptop it is greyed out because there is nothing there to lock.
Which graphics does my computer actually have?

Can I make my own keyboard shortcut to rotate the screen?
Not with anything built into Windows. Windows lets you assign shortcuts to shortcut files that launch programs, but there is no built-in command to change display orientation that you can attach a key to. Third-party utilities can do it, and some are genuinely fine, but installing a background program that watches every keypress is a real trade-off for something Settings does in four clicks. The shortcut worked last week and stopped after an update. Why?
Windows Update delivers graphics drivers as well as Windows itself, so an update can quietly replace a driver that registered the hotkey with a newer one that does not. Nothing is corrupted and nothing needs repairing. If your hardware still supports it, check Intel Graphics Command Center under System, Hot Keys and turn them back on, because a driver replacement resets that setting to off.
Does rotating the screen affect performance or damage the display?
No on both counts. Rotation is handled by the graphics chip as it sends the picture to the monitor, the cost is negligible on any hardware from the last fifteen years, and nothing is being done to the panel that could wear it out. The only practical downside is that some full-screen games ignore the rotated orientation and force themselves back to landscape.
Should I install a driver utility to get the hotkey back?
No. Search results for this problem are full of driver-updater downloads, and none of them can add a feature that your graphics vendor removed from the driver. A driver updater cannot restore something that is not in the driver to begin with. Install graphics drivers only from your laptop maker or directly from Intel, AMD or NVIDIA, and use Settings for the rotation itself.
Does any of this work differently in a virtual machine or remote desktop?
Yes, and it is worth knowing before you troubleshoot. A virtual machine uses a virtual display adapter, so there is no vendor hotkey at all, and orientation is controlled by the guest system or by the virtualization software. In a remote desktop session the keyboard combination is usually captured by the remote session rather than reaching your own computer, so pressing it can affect the machine at the other end instead of yours.
What Jake told the customer in the end
That the shortcut was retired by Intel years ago and that their laptop had never had it, because it has an AMD chip. That the thing they remembered was real, and had worked, on their old machine.
Then he pinned the Display settings page to their Start menu, showed them where the orientation drop-down is, and sent them off in under five minutes.
"They were fine about it," he said afterwards, sounding faintly surprised. "I think they just wanted to know they weren't going mad."
"That's most of this job," Ethan said. "Half the people who think they've broken something have actually just found out that a feature left without telling them."
Which is the honest summary of this whole page.
