Win + P Display Switch and Second Monitor Not Detected (Windows 11 & 10)

The display switch shortcut in Windows 11 and 10 is Win + P. Press it and a panel offers four ways to use a second screen, monitor or projector: PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend and Second screen only. Press P again, or the arrow keys, to move between them, and Enter to pick one. That one shortcut is also the fastest fix for "display 2 isn't active": choose Extend and the second screen wakes up. Here is the part that rescues people every week: Win + P works even when you cannot see anything. If you are stuck on a black screen because Windows is sending the picture to a projector that is no longer plugged in, press Win + P, then P twice more and Enter, and the picture comes back to your laptop without your seeing a single menu.

Jake found that out in a meeting room. He had presented from his laptop the day before, and the next morning, at his desk, the laptop booted to a black screen with only a mouse pointer. Ethan, over the phone, had him press Win + P, then P, P, Enter. The screen came back. The laptop had simply remembered "Second screen only" from the projector. Ethan uses the same shortcut daily for the opposite reason: he docks his laptop at a desk with two monitors and wants Extend every time, so he made a one-click desktop shortcut that sets it without even opening the panel. Both are on this page.

Everything below works the same with a TV, a projector, a docking station or a portable monitor, wired or wireless.

Win + P: the four display modes and what each one does

Windows remembers the last mode for each display it has seen, which is helpful at your own desk and is exactly why Jake's laptop came back in "Second screen only" the morning after a meeting.

In Windows 11 the Win + P panel slides out from the bottom-right corner and also shows Connect to a wireless display. In Windows 10 it slides in from the right edge, with Connect to a wireless display at the bottom. Press P repeatedly to step through the options, or use the arrow keys, then Enter; or simply click the one you want.

The blind fix: black screen after unplugging a projector or monitor

If your laptop starts to a black screen with maybe a mouse pointer, and it was last connected to a projector, TV or external monitor, the picture is almost certainly being sent to a screen that is not there. You can fix it without seeing anything:

1. Sign in as you normally would, even though you cannot see the screen. Wait a few seconds after typing your PIN or password.
2. Press Win + P. The panel opens, invisibly.
3. Press P twice more and then Enter. That usually lands on PC screen only or Duplicate.
4. If the screen is still black after a few seconds, repeat Win + P, P, Enter once more to step to the next mode.

Still black? Press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B, which restarts the graphics driver: the screen flickers and you hear a short beep, and it often wakes a display that has lost its signal. If you have the external screen nearby, plugging it back in and choosing PC screen only from it is the surest route. A screen that stays black even then is a different problem; the display driver guide covers the driver side.

"Display 2 isn't active" and second screen not detected

If Settings shows two displays but says Display 2 isn't active, or the second screen is plugged in and stays dark, work down this list:

1. Press Win + P and choose Extend. "Isn't active" usually means the mode is PC screen only, so the second display is connected but switched off by Windows.
2. Use Detect. Settings → System → Display → Multiple displays → Detect. In Windows 10 the Detect button sits under the display diagram.
3. Check the monitor's own input. Use the monitor's buttons to pick the correct input (HDMI 1, HDMI 2, DisplayPort, USB-C). A monitor on the wrong input shows "No signal" even when Windows is sending one.
4. Reseat or swap the cable, and try the other port on the laptop. A USB-C port that does not support video (not every one does) will charge or transfer data but never show a picture; look for the DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbol next to the port.
5. Restart the graphics driver with Win + Ctrl + Shift + B.
6. Update or roll back the graphics driver in Device Manager → Display adapters, especially if the problem started after an update. The AMD update guide covers one well-known case.

If Windows still will not wake the second screen, the graphics company's own control panel can override it. On NVIDIA cards, open NVIDIA Control Panel → Set up multiple displays and tick the second screen. With Intel graphics, open Intel Graphics Command Center → Display, click the three dots on the inactive screen, and enable it. With AMD, open AMD Software → Display and check that the monitor is enabled. A firmware (BIOS) update from the laptop maker fixes the remaining stubborn cases, especially on USB-C and Thunderbolt docks.

In the Display settings you can also pick which screen is your main display (the one with the taskbar clock and where new windows open): click the screen in the diagram and check Make this my main display. Drag the screen rectangles so they match how the monitors sit on your desk, so your mouse crosses between them where you expect.

Second monitor not detected in Windows 11 or 10: by connection type

"Second monitor not detected" is a different problem from "isn't active": Windows does not see the screen at all, so it is missing from Display settings. The fix depends on how it is connected:

Whatever the connection, two quick checks first: press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the graphics driver, and in Settings → System → Display → Multiple displays, click Detect. On a laptop, plugging the monitor in while the laptop is on and awake, rather than at startup, helps some older docks recognize it.

Make a one-click display switch shortcut

The original version of this page was about exactly this, and it is still the neatest trick for anyone who docks and undocks daily. Windows ships a small program, DisplaySwitch.exe, that does what the Win + P panel does, and a desktop shortcut to it switches mode in one double-click.

1. Right-click an empty part of the desktop and choose New → Shortcut.
2. For the location, type the line for your Windows version and click Next:
   • Windows 11: C:\Windows\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe 3 for Extend. Use 1 for PC screen only, 2 for Duplicate, 4 for Second screen only.
   • Windows 10: C:\Windows\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /extend, or /internal, /clone, /external.
3. Name it something obvious, such as "Extend displays", and click Finish.
4. Optional: right-click the shortcut → Properties → Shortcut key, click in the box and press a combination such as Ctrl + Alt + E to trigger it from the keyboard. Change its icon there too; the shortcut icon guide shows how.

Why two syntaxes? Windows 11 changed DisplaySwitch.exe to take the numbers 1 to 4, and the old word switches work on some Windows 11 builds and not others. That inconsistency is why so many shortcuts made from Windows 10 guides "do nothing" or just open the Win + P panel on a new PC. Use the numbers on Windows 11, with no slash before the number, and test the shortcut once. If it still only opens the panel, try running it once from an administrator Command Prompt. The same commands work in scripts, which is how meeting-room PCs are set to Duplicate at every sign-in.

Other multi-monitor shortcuts worth knowing

The Settings route: Multiple displays

Win + P is the shortcut; Settings is the full control room. Open Settings → System → Display. With two screens connected you will see numbered rectangles and, below them, a drop-down offering the same four modes as Win + P (Duplicate these displays, Extend these displays, Show only on 1, Show only on 2). Under Multiple displays in Windows 11 you also find:

• Remember window locations based on monitor connection: windows go back to the screen they were on when you reconnect.
• Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected: stops apps landing off-screen when you unplug.
• Ease cursor movement between displays: helps the mouse cross between screens of different sizes.
• Detect and Connect to a wireless display.

Presenting on a projector: the routine that avoids surprises

1. Connect the projector cable before you open your presentation.
2. Press Win + P and choose Duplicate if you want to see what the room sees, or Extend if you want presenter notes on your laptop and slides on the projector (PowerPoint's Presenter View uses Extend).
3. Turn on Do not disturb (Windows 11 notifications bell) so chat pop-ups do not appear on the big screen.
4. When you finish, press Win + P and choose PC screen only before you unplug. That one habit prevents the black-screen morning Jake had.

When the wireless display will not connect

Win + K and the Connect to a wireless display option use Miracast, and when they fail it is usually one of these:

• The TV or adapter is not in screen-mirroring mode. Many TVs only appear in the list after you select Screen Mirroring, Miracast or Wireless Display as the input.
• The PC does not support it. Press Win + R, type dxdiag, click Save All Information, and look for "Miracast: Available" in the saved file. Older Wi-Fi cards and some desktop PCs report "Not Supported".
• The optional feature is missing. On some Windows 11 installs, go to Settings → System → Optional features → View features and add Wireless Display.
• The network blocks it. Office and hotel Wi-Fi often blocks the peer-to-peer connection Miracast needs. A cable is the reliable answer there.
• A firewall or VPN interferes. Disconnect the VPN briefly and try again.

Once connected, Win + P switches the wireless screen between Duplicate and Extend just like a cabled one, and Win + K again shows a Disconnect button.

For IT admins: display modes in meeting rooms and on fleets

• Meeting-room PCs: run DisplaySwitch.exe 2 (Windows 11) or DisplaySwitch.exe /clone (Windows 10) from a sign-in script or a scheduled task at logon so every session starts in Duplicate. Pilot it on your exact build first; the switch handling has varied across Windows 11 releases.
• Win + key shortcuts can be disabled by the Group Policy User Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → File Explorer → Turn off Windows Key hotkeys. If users report Win + P doing nothing, check for that policy before chasing drivers.
• Docking stations: most "second monitor not detected" tickets are dock firmware or USB-C ports without video support. Keep dock firmware in your update process alongside graphics drivers.
• Wireless display: Miracast requires the Wireless Display optional feature on some editions and Wi-Fi direct support; corporate networks that block peer-to-peer Wi-Fi will block Win + K casting too.

Jake now presses Win + P and picks PC screen only before he unplugs from any projector, and he has not had a black-screen morning since. Ethan's "Extend" shortcut sits on his desktop next to a "PC screen only" one for the train. One key combination, four choices, and the knowledge that it works even when the screen is dark. That last part is what turns a frightening morning into a ten-second fix.
