Kali Linux 2024.2 Download: Where the ISO Lives in 2026 and beyond
If you came here for the Kali Linux 2024.2 download, the short version is that it is no longer where this post originally sent you. Go to old.kali.org, open the kali-images directory and then the kali-2024.2 folder — every image from that release is still sitting there, along with the signed SHA256SUMS file you should be checking it against. The link in the original version of this post still works, which turns out to be the problem, because it now quietly hands you a completely different release.
The handout says 2024.2
Almost nobody wakes up wanting a two-year-old operating system. The people who land on this page have been sent here by something — a course handout that specifies 2024.2, a lab guide whose screenshots stopped matching reality, a write-up they are trying to reproduce step for step, or a laptop that will not boot anything newer.
So they follow the download link, get a file, and either it is the wrong version or it will not install or it installs and then refuses to update. Each of those has a specific cause, and none of the causes are obvious from the error you get.
What follows is five things people believe about downloading an old Kali release. Four of them are wrong. The fifth is true, and it is the one worth reading properly, because it decides whether you should be doing any of this at all.
Belief 1: "the old download link still gets me 2024.2"
It does not, and the way it fails is genuinely nasty: it succeeds.
The address this post originally carried ends in /current/. That is not a link to a version, it is a link to a position — whichever release Kali considers current at the moment you click it. In June 2024, current meant 2024.2, so the link was exactly right. Kali has shipped several releases since. The link has not changed, the meaning underneath it has, and the download starts immediately either way.
You end up with a perfectly good ISO of the wrong release, no warning, no redirect notice, and a filename you probably will not read closely because you already know what you clicked.
✅ Where the fixed addresses live
Kali keeps every past release at old.kali.org, under kali-images, in a folder named for the version — kali-2024.2, kali-2023.4, and so on back to the 1.x days. Those folders do not move and their contents do not change. When you need a specific release, that is the address to bookmark, not anything containing the word current.
We are leaving the original link in place in the archive of this post rather than pretending it was never there, because it is a useful example of a failure mode that will happen to you again: a link that stays valid while its meaning drifts underneath. Kali is not doing anything wrong by having a moving pointer. Anyone writing down a moving pointer as though it were a fixed one is, and in June 2024 that was us.
Belief 2: "installing 2024.2 gives me the xz backdoor"
No. And this one matters, because the fear is attached to the right release for entirely the wrong reason.
The compromise, catalogued as CVE-2024-3094, was malicious code planted in the xz-utils compression library — specifically in liblzma, which a great deal of software links against. It became public at the end of March 2024, and it was the kind of thing that makes security people go quiet: not a bug that was exploited, but a backdoor deliberately built into the source over a long period by someone who had earned the maintainers' trust.
Now put the dates side by side, because that is the whole answer:

A machine installed from a 2024.2 image was never affected. The systems that genuinely were are rolling installs that ran an update inside that narrow window in late March — which, if you keep a Kali box updated, might well describe a machine you still own.
So the check is still worth running. It just belongs on your existing installs, not on this download:
Read the line that begins Installed:. If it shows 5.6.0 or 5.6.1, upgrade now. If it shows 5.6.1+really5.4.5-1 you are fine, and that peculiar version string is deliberate rather than a packaging accident — it is the safe 5.4.5 code wearing a higher number so that package managers treat it as an upgrade rather than a downgrade.
⚠️ What we cannot tell you
If a machine ran the backdoored library while exposed to a network, no command can prove nothing happened. Absence of evidence on a host that may have been compromised is not evidence of absence, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling certainty they do not have. On a machine that mattered, rebuild it. On a lab VM, upgrade and move on.
Belief 3: "the checksums in the blog post are good enough"
This post used to carry the full list of SHA256 hashes for every 2024.2 image — forty-odd lines of them. That list is gone, deliberately, and the reasoning is worth more than the list was.
A checksum answers exactly one question: did the bytes I received match the bytes somebody expected? It is a comparison, and a comparison is only as good as the thing on the other side. When that other side is a list copied into a web page, you have not verified your download — you have verified that it matches whatever a blog says, which is a different and much weaker claim. It also assumes nobody mistyped a character while copying, that the page has not been edited since, and that you are on the page you think you are.
The source Kali actually publishes is a file named SHA256SUMS, sitting in the same directory as the images, and next to it a detached signature called SHA256SUMS.gpg. Both are in the 2024.2 archive folder right now. Two steps rather than one:
Step one: does the file match the list?

Compare the result to the matching line in SHA256SUMS. Compare the whole string, not the first six characters and the last six — that shortcut is how people convince themselves a mismatched file is fine. Step two: is the list itself genuine?
This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one that makes the first step mean something. Import Kali's signing key, then check the detached signature against the list:
A good signature means the list came from Kali. Combined with step one, that gets you an actual chain: the key vouches for the list, the list vouches for the ISO. Either step alone leaves a hole. Both together are why it is perfectly safe to download the image over a torrent or an unofficial mirror — a hostile delivery route cannot forge a signature it does not have the key for.
What is not safe, and no amount of verification rescues, is an ISO from a file-sharing site or a shortened link where there is no signed list to check against in the first place. If there is nothing to verify, you are not verifying.
Belief 4: "install it, run apt update, and I am current"
This is where most people actually get stuck, and it happens before anything else can go right.
Kali changed its repository signing key in April 2025. Any image built before that carries a keyring that no longer matches what the repositories are signed with — which includes every 2024.x release. So the very first apt update on a freshly installed 2024.2 system fails signature verification and refuses to fetch anything at all.
The error text is not friendly about it. Modern Kali verifies signatures with sqv, part of the Sequoia PGP toolkit, so the failure surfaces as a complaint about a sub-process called /usr/bin/sqv returning an error code, usually alongside the fingerprint of the key it wanted. It reads like something is broken on your machine. Nothing is.

That replaces the stale keyring with the current one, over HTTPS, from Kali's own archive host. After it, apt update behaves normally. We have written this up at length, including what to do when the download itself is what fails: fixing the missing Kali signing key and the sqv apt error.
♂️ The advice you will find, that no longer works
"Just add the key with apt-key adv --recv-keys like every forum post says."
That command is gone. apt-key was deprecated and then removed, and current Kali does not consult the keyring it used to manage. Following that advice produces either a command-not-found or, worse, a key added somewhere nothing reads — which looks like it worked and changes nothing. Replace the keyring file directly, as above.
Then comes the two-year upgrade
With the key fixed, you are looking at pulling two years of changes onto a fresh install. Use full-upgrade, never plain upgrade — Kali is a rolling release, and plain upgrade refuses any change that would remove a package, which on a jump this size means it refuses most of the work:
Three things worth knowing before you start it. It will download several gigabytes, so do not begin on a metered connection. It will appear to hang on packages that rebuild the initramfs or regenerate font caches, and long silences there are normal. And if it gets interrupted — closed lid, dropped connection, an impatient Ctrl+C — you will meet the dpkg was interrupted error, which is recoverable but adds a step.
One cosmetic surprise at the end: current Kali has moved its repository configuration to a newer format, in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kali.sources, rather than the single /etc/apt/sources.list file an older install uses. Both work. If you upgrade an old system and then follow a current guide that tells you to edit a file you do not appear to have, that is why.
Belief 5: "I need 2024.2 specifically" — the one that is sometimes true
Four beliefs down, all wrong. This one is right for a small number of people and wrong for everybody else, so it is worth being honest about which you are.
Genuine reasons to use the archived 2024.2 image:
- You need the 32-bit build. Kali dropped the i386 installer and live images starting with 2024.4, so 2024.2 is one of the last releases that has them. If you are working with genuinely old hardware, the archive is now the only source. We covered that change when it was announced: why 32-bit Kali went away.
- You are reproducing a documented environment — a lab, a course, a published write-up, a bug report. When the point is that everything matches, matching is the point.
- Your hardware disagrees with a newer kernel. Rare, but real, and usually involves a wireless chipset or a graphics driver that regressed.
- You are studying the release itself — the t64 transition, a tool version that has since changed behavior, or the state of a package at a known date.
- You are building an offline baseline that gets snapshotted and rolled back rather than updated.
Reasons that feel genuine and are not: a tutorial from 2024 with matching screenshots (menus moved, the commands did not), a belief that the older release is lighter (it is not, meaningfully), and wanting to avoid a big upgrade (installing the current release avoids it entirely, which is the opposite of what this route does).
✅ The thing worth understanding about rolling releases
Kali's version number is a snapshot, not a wall. A 2024.2 install that you fully update becomes the current version — same kernel, same packages, same everything. The number only describes which day the ISO was built. So installing an old image and updating it produces the identical result to installing the current image, after a much longer and more fragile journey. If you are not deliberately staying old, there is nothing to gain.
Which file to actually take
The 2024.2 folder holds around forty files, which is the second place people stall. Most of them are not for you.

Once it boots, the live and prebuilt VM images log in with kali as both username and password. There is no root account to log into and has not been since 2020 — administrative work goes through sudo. Change that password before the machine sees a network you do not own, and if you are unsure what you ended up running, checking your Kali version takes one command.
Will it work on all versions?
Short Answer: Yes!
What 2024.2 actually was
Worth a short section, because if you are reproducing something from this era it helps to know what you are standing on.
It arrived on 5 June 2024, later than Kali's usual quarterly rhythm, and the announcement was candid that the delay came from work under the hood rather than anything you could see. That work was the t64 transition — a Debian-wide change to how time values are stored, so that 32-bit systems do not fall over in 2038. It touched an enormous number of packages simultaneously, which is exactly the sort of change that makes a release late and makes upgrades across it interesting.
On the surface: GNOME 46 for anyone running that desktop rather than the default Xfce, and seventeen new tools, including ligolo-ng for tunneling and pivoting, pspy for watching processes without needing root, plus coercer, dploot and a packaged snort.
If the GNOME part is what you were after, note that you do not need this release to get it — installing GNOME as your desktop on current Kali is a supported path and gets you a much newer GNOME than 46. Same for hardware annoyances that people wrongly blame on release versions; Bluetooth on Kali is a configuration problem in every release, not a 2024.2 one.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I download Kali Linux 2024.2 now?
From the Kali archive at old.kali.org, under the kali-images directory, in the folder named kali-2024.2. How do I check if my system has the backdoored xz-utils?
Run apt-cache policy liblzma5 in a terminal and read the line beginning Installed. If it shows 5.6.0 or 5.6.1 you are on an affected build and should upgrade immediately. The fixed package reads 5.6.1+really5.4.5-1, which looks like a mistake but is deliberate: it is the safe 5.4.5 code carrying a higher version number so that package managers offer it as an upgrade.
How do I verify a Kali ISO checksum?
Download the SHA256SUMS file from the same folder as the ISO, then compare. On Linux run sha256sum on the ISO and match the string. On Windows run certutil -hashfile yourfile.iso SHA256 or Get-FileHash in PowerShell. Doing only that proves the file matches the list, not that the list is genuine, so also verify SHA256SUMS.gpg against Kali's signing key. That second step is the one almost everybody skips.
Why does apt update fail on a fresh Kali 2024.2 install?
Because Kali changed its repository signing key in April 2025, and an image built in 2024 carries the old keyring. The first apt update after installing therefore fails signature verification, usually with a message mentioning sqv. The fix is to fetch the current keyring over HTTPS from archive.kali.org and replace the one on disk, then run apt update again. This happens on every archived image older than that key change.
Should I install Kali 2024.2 or the current release?
The current release, unless you have a specific reason not to. Kali is a rolling distribution, so a fully updated 2024.2 install ends up as the current version anyway, only after a very large and occasionally messy upgrade. Installing an older image buys you nothing except that upgrade. The genuine exceptions are reproducing a documented lab environment, needing the 32-bit build, or running hardware the newer kernel does not like.
Does Kali 2024.2 still have a 32-bit i386 version?
Yes, and this is the one genuinely good reason to reach for an archived image. Kali dropped its 32-bit i386 installer and live builds starting with the 2024.4 release, so 2024.2 and 2024.3 are among the last releases offering them. If you are working with genuinely old 32-bit hardware, the archive is the only place those images now exist.
What is the default username and password for Kali Linux?
On the live and prebuilt virtual machine images it is kali for both the username and the password. If you install to disk you choose your own account during setup instead. There is no root login by default and there has not been since early 2020, so administrative commands run through sudo. Change the password before that machine touches any network you do not control.

If the handout is the only reason
Back to where this started. If a course handout is the entire reason you are downloading a two-year-old operating system, it is worth a moment's thought before you spend the evening on it. Course materials specify a version so that everybody's screenshots match, not usually because the exercises depend on it. Most of the time the current release does everything the handout asks, with menus in slightly different places and no keyring surprise waiting at the first update.
But if you do need this exact release — and the 32-bit case is a genuinely good one — the archive still has every file, the signature still checks out, and now you know about the key change before it happens to you rather than at midnight afterward. That is the part the original version of this post could not have told you, for the excellent reason that it had not happened yet.

and whether they still need it. The archive location was re-checked on
