Jailbreak iPhone in 2026: checkra1n, palera1n, Dopamine by Device, and Why iOS 27 Has None

Logeshwaran
—

Can you jailbreak an iPhone in 2026? Yes, but only an older one, and only on the iOS version it is already running. checkra1n and palera1n still jailbreak the iPhone 5s through the iPhone X, because they use checkm8, a hardware flaw Apple cannot patch. Dopamine 3.0, released in August 2026, jailbreaks the iPhone XS through the iPhone 15 Pro on specific iOS 16, 17, 18 and 26.0 builds. Here is the part that surprises almost everyone: there is no public jailbreak for iOS 27, and none for the iPhone 16, 17 or 18 on any version. Every website offering an "iOS 27 jailbreak" or a checkra1n "for iPhone 17" is selling you a scam, and some of them install malware.

Jake runs a phone repair shop, and at least once a week someone puts an iPhone on his counter and asks him to "jailbreak it". Sometimes they want themes. Sometimes a friend told them it unlocks free apps. Sometimes it is a secondhand phone stuck on an Apple ID screen and they hope a jailbreak will make it go away. Jake used to say no without really knowing why, so he asked Ethan, who looks after the shop's tech, to explain it properly once. This page is that explanation, rewritten for October 2026: which iPhones can still be jailbroken and with which tool, how checkra1n, palera1n and Dopamine actually work, what to do on Windows, how to spot the fake jailbreak sites, what Apple and the law say, and the honest answer to whether you should do it at all.

⚡ Quick answer

• iPhone 5s to iPhone X: checkra1n (iOS 12 to 14) or palera1n (iOS 15 and later). Needs a Mac or Linux PC every time the phone restarts.

• iPhone XS to iPhone 15 Pro: Dopamine 3.0, but only on the exact iOS builds it supports. A12 and A13 phones reach iOS 18.7.1 and 26.0.1; A14 to A17 phones stop at iOS 17.3.1.

• iPhone 16, 17, 18, or anything on iOS 27: no public jailbreak exists. Sites that say otherwise are scams.

• Updated already? You cannot go back. Apple stops signing older iOS versions within days of a new release.

• Windows: checkra1n and palera1n do not run on Windows. Boot palen1x from a USB drive instead.

• Activation Lock: a jailbreak does not remove it. Only the owner, or Apple with proof of purchase, can.

What jailbreaking an iPhone actually means in 2026

Every iPhone runs iOS inside a set of locks Apple controls. Apps live in sandboxes, the system files are read-only and cryptographically sealed, and only code Apple has signed is allowed to run. A jailbreak uses a security flaw to step outside those locks and give you root, the administrator account Apple keeps for itself. With root you can install tweaks that change how iOS looks and behaves, run apps Apple would never approve, and read and change files that are normally invisible.

That definition has not changed since the first iPhone. What has changed is how hard it is. A jailbreak needs a flaw Apple has not fixed yet, and Apple fixes them fast, pays researchers up to $2 million for the serious ones, and has spent years adding hardware protections that block the old tricks. So a modern jailbreak is never "for iPhones". It is for a particular chip, on a particular range of iOS builds, and when you update past that range, it is gone for that phone.

Three words come up constantly, and they decide how a jailbreak feels to live with.

TermWhat it means for youExample
Semi-tetheredThe phone boots normally as stock iOS. To be jailbroken again after a restart, you plug it into a computer and run the tool.checkra1n, palera1n
Re-jailbreak from an appAfter a restart the phone is stock; you open the jailbreak app on the phone and run it again. No computer needed.Dopamine
Rootless vs rootfulRootless jailbreaks leave Apple's sealed system volume alone and put tweaks in a separate folder. Rootful ones modify the system itself. Tweaks built for one do not work on the other.Dopamine is rootless; palera1n offers both

None of today's tools are "untethered", the old kind that survived a restart on its own. If someone tells you their jailbreak works forever with no computer and no app, they are describing something that does not exist for current iPhones.

Jake: "So when a customer says 'just jailbreak it', there is no single thing I could even do."

Ethan: "Right. First question is always which iPhone and which iOS. That decides whether there is a tool at all, and most of the time, for a phone bought in the last two years, there is not."

Which iPhones can be jailbroken right now: the October 2026 table

Find your phone's chip in the first column. Then check your iOS version in Settings → General → About → iOS Version. If your version is inside the range in the third column, there is a public tool for you. If it is above it, there is not, and there is no way to go back down.

Two things in that table deserve a second look. The iPhone 8 and X have the widest choice of any phone still in use, because they are the newest iPhones with the checkm8 hardware flaw. And the iPhone 11 is the newest phone that can be jailbroken at all on a recent iOS, but only on two specific builds, 26.0 and 26.0.1; if it has updated to 26.1 or later, it is out.

For iPads the ranges follow the chip too, with a few extras: M1 and M2 iPads reach iPadOS 17.3.1 through Dopamine, and some A10 iPads that kept getting updates reach iPadOS 18.7.1. The rule is the same: chip first, exact version second.

Jake: "Half my customers are on an iPhone 13 or 14 and updated last month."

Ethan: "Then the honest answer for them is no, and it is a short conversation. Dopamine stops at 17.3.1 on those, and they are on 26 or 27."

Why there is no jailbreak for iOS 27 or the iPhone 16, 17 and 18

Apple released iOS 27 on September 14, 2026, and iOS 27.0.1 two weeks later. No public jailbreak exists for it on any iPhone, and none exists for the A18 and A19 chips in the iPhone 16 and 17 families on any iOS version. The iPhone 18 ships on iOS 27, so it has none either. Security firms that track this for a living put the line even earlier: nothing above iOS 18 has a reliable public jailbreak across devices, and the only iOS 26 support at all is Dopamine's narrow 26.0 to 26.0.1 window on A12 and A13.

The reason is not that people stopped trying. Each new chip adds hardware protections, and since the A12 the kernel jailbreak needs not just one flaw but a chain: a bug to get in, then a bypass for Apple's page protection layers, then more to make the changes stick. Dopamine 3.0 exists because researchers published bypasses named Titan and momentarius for older iOS builds; when Apple closed those, the window closed with them.

There is one piece of genuine news this year, and it is worth getting right because scam sites are already twisting it. In June 2026 researchers disclosed usbliter8, a flaw in the boot ROM of the A12 and A13 chips, the same kind of unpatchable hardware bug as checkm8. It needs physical access and a USB connection, and as of its disclosure there was no full jailbreak built on it. Researchers have since booted a modified iOS 27 on an iPhone 11 Pro with it, but only tethered to a computer on every boot and with core features broken. It is a research result, not a tool you can download, and it does not reach the iPhone 12 or anything newer.

Nor can you sidestep the problem by going back to an older iOS. Apple stops signing older builds, usually within about a week of a new release, and an iPhone will not install a build Apple no longer signs. In late September 2026 Apple stopped signing iOS 26.6.2, which means a phone that has moved to iOS 27 has no route back to iOS 26 at all. If you ever plan to jailbreak a phone, the single most important step is the one you take before any tool: do not update it.

⚠ If a site says it can jailbreak iOS 27, it is lying

No public iOS 27 jailbreak exists. Pages offering one for an iPhone 16, 17 or 18 make money from installs, surveys, configuration profiles or payments, and security researchers have found fake jailbreak tools carrying malware. Closing the tab costs you nothing.

How to spot a fake jailbreak in thirty seconds

The jailbreak world has a large shadow industry, and it ranks well in search because it targets exactly the questions people type: "checkra1n for iPhone 17", "iOS 27 jailbreak", "online jailbreak no computer". The real developers all say the same thing on their own sites: download only from the official domain, and avoid look-alike sites, because those are often malicious. Here is how the fakes give themselves away.

  1. It supports a phone or iOS version the table above says has nothing. That alone is enough. There is no secret private jailbreak for the iPhone 17 that a download page is giving away.
  2. It works "online" or "with no computer" on a checkm8 tool's name. checkra1n and palera1n physically cannot run from a web page; they need the phone in DFU mode on a USB cable. A "checkra1n mirror" or "checkra1n online" is a different, fake product borrowing a famous name.
  3. It asks you to install a configuration profile. A profile can route your traffic, add certificates and manage your device. It does not jailbreak anything. Profiles from these sites are the main way they do harm.
  4. It wants a survey, an app install or a payment to "unlock" the final step. The real tools are free, and none of them gate anything behind "human verification".
  5. The domain is a variation of a real name. The only official homes are checkra.in for checkra1n, palera.in for palera1n, and Dopamine's own project pages and its open-source repository. Anything else is someone else.
  6. It promises to remove Activation Lock or iCloud. No jailbreak does that, as the Activation Lock section below explains. This promise is the one most often attached to outright theft and fraud.

If you already installed a profile from one of these sites, go to Settings → General → VPN & Device Management, open the profile you do not recognize, and remove it. Then change the password of any account you signed into while it was installed, starting with your Apple ID and your email.

Jake: "A customer showed me a site that said it jailbroke his iPhone 16 'in the cloud'. He had to install two games first."

Ethan: "That is the whole business model. The games paid the site for the installs. His phone was never touched by any jailbreak, and I would check his profiles before he leaves the shop."

checkra1n: the original checkm8 jailbreak, and where it stands

checkra1n is the tool that made the checkm8 flaw famous. checkm8 lives in the boot ROM, the first code an iPhone runs when it powers on, which is burned into the chip at the factory. Apple cannot update it, so every iPhone with an A11 chip or older is jailbreakable at the hardware level for the rest of its life. checkra1n uses that to jailbreak the iPhone 5s through the iPhone X.

The current release is checkra1n 0.12.4 beta, and its own site describes it as a jailbreak "for iPhone 5s through iPhone X, iOS 12.0 and up". In practice it stops at iOS 14; for iOS 15 and later on the same phones, the community moved to palera1n, which is the actively maintained checkm8 tool. checkra1n also only runs on macOS and Linux. The site has long said Windows support will come "in a later release", and it has not arrived.

So who should still use checkra1n in 2026? Only someone with an iPhone 5s to X that is still on iOS 12, 13 or 14, often an old phone kept as a test device, a music player, or a project. For everyone else with those phones, palera1n is the better choice, and it is also what people mean in 2026 when they search for "checkra1n vs palera1n".

palera1n: the checkm8 jailbreak for iOS 15 and later

palera1n picked up where checkra1n stopped. It supports devices from the A8 to the A11, plus Macs with the Apple T2 chip, on iOS 15 and later, and it lets you choose a rootless or a rootful jailbreak from its command-line tool. Because it uses the same boot ROM flaw, it has the same shape as checkra1n: the phone is put into DFU mode, connected to a computer by USB, and the tool boots it into a jailbroken state. Restart the phone and it comes back as plain iOS until you run palera1n again.

There are two warnings for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X that catch almost everyone, and they come from how the A11's Secure Enclave interacts with the exploit. On A11 devices the passcode must be turned off while jailbroken, and Face ID, Touch ID and Apple Pay will not work until you return to normal iOS. And on an A11 running iOS 16 that has ever had a passcode set, you must erase all content and settings before the first jailbreak. If your iPhone X is your daily phone with Apple Pay and Face ID, that alone is a reason to stop and think.

On a Mac or a Linux PC the flow looks like this. The commands are the general shape; follow the current instructions on the official site, because flags change between releases.

  1. Back up the iPhone to your computer or iCloud first. A jailbreak attempt can leave the phone needing a restore.
  2. Download palera1n only from palera.in, and check that the version matches your computer's processor.
  3. Connect the iPhone with a USB-A to Lightning cable if you can. USB-C to Lightning cables are known to cause trouble entering DFU mode.
  4. Run the palera1n command in a terminal. For a rootless jailbreak that is palera1n -l.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to put the phone into DFU mode. The tool counts down which buttons to hold and when.
  6. Let the tool finish. The phone reboots jailbroken and shows a loader app, which installs the package manager.
  7. After any later restart, plug in and run the same command again to re-jailbreak.

If an older A9 or earlier phone gets stuck on a pongoOS screen, the documented workaround is to press Control-C in the terminal and run the command again. None of this ever involves a website, a profile, or an account.

checkra1n and palera1n on Windows: the honest answer

"checkra1n Windows" is the most searched phrase around this tool, and the answer is short: neither checkra1n nor palera1n runs on Windows, and running them inside a virtual machine on Windows does not work either, because the USB connection in DFU mode is too sensitive to pass through. Any Windows "checkra1n.exe" you find is not the real thing.

What does work is booting a Windows PC into a tiny Linux system from a USB stick, running palera1n there, and rebooting back into Windows afterwards. The palera1n team publishes one for exactly this, called palen1x, a live bootable Linux environment whose only job is to run palera1n. Nothing on your Windows installation is touched.

  1. Get a USB drive of at least 128 MB. It will be erased.
  2. Download the latest palen1x release from the palera1n project, and Ventoy, a free tool that makes a USB drive bootable for ISO files.
  3. Run Ventoy2Disk.exe, choose the USB drive, and click Install. Then copy the palen1x ISO onto the drive.
  4. Restart the PC, enter the firmware settings, and disable Secure Boot. Each PC maker uses a different key to get there.
  5. Open the boot menu, pick the USB drive, and at the Ventoy screen press Enter on palen1x.
  6. Choose Shell, type palera1n -l, and follow the DFU instructions as on a Mac.
  7. When you are done, remove the USB drive, turn Secure Boot back on if you use it, and boot Windows as normal.

One hardware note from the palen1x guide: PCs with AMD Ryzen processors are likely to run into problems with the DFU connection, and a Mac or an Intel PC is the more reliable choice. If you have access to an old Intel laptop, it is worth borrowing for this.

Jake: "So I could do it on the shop PC without installing anything on it?"

Ethan: "Boot from the stick, run it, pull the stick, reboot. Windows never knows. The bigger question is whether the customer should, which we are coming to."

Dopamine 3.0: the jailbreak for the iPhone XS through the iPhone 15

For every iPhone newer than the X, the boot ROM route is closed, so jailbreaking means a software exploit chain, and in 2026 that means Dopamine. Dopamine 3.0 arrived on August 7, 2026, and the current release is 3.0.10 from September 23. It is a rootless jailbreak that installs the Sileo and Zebra package managers, and it is open source.

What 3.0 changed is reach. It added the Titan bypass for iOS 16.5.1 through 17.3.1 and the momentarius bypass for A12 and A13 devices, plus a more reliable exploit called ClearSword. That is how the iPhone XS, XR and 11 got support up to iOS 18.7.1, and the iPhone 11 up to 26.0.1. For the A14 to A17 phones, the iPhone 12 through 15 Pro, support stays at iOS 17.3.1.

ChipDopamine 3.0 supports
A8, A8XiOS 15.8.7 to 15.8.8
A9, A9X, A11iOS 15.8.7 to 16.7.16
A10iOS 15.8.7 to 15.8.8, and 16.7 to 18.7.1 (iPads)
A12, A12X, A12Z, A13iOS 16.6 to 18.7.1, and 26.0 to 26.0.1
A14, M1iOS 16.6 to 17.3.1
A15, A16, A17, M2iOS 16.5.1 to 17.3.1

Dopamine is an app, not a computer tool, which makes it feel friendlier and also raises a practical problem: you have to get the app onto the phone. Apple will not let it into the App Store, so it is distributed as an IPA file from its official project page and installed either through TrollStore, on the iOS versions TrollStore supports, or by sideloading it with your own Apple ID. TrollStore itself is not a jailbreak and does not support iOS 18 or iOS 26, so on those versions sideloading is the route. Once installed, you open Dopamine, tap Jailbreak, and the phone does a userspace reboot into the jailbroken state.

Because Dopamine is rootless, tweaks have to be built for the rootless layout. Older rootful tweaks will not install, and the ones that do install need to be updated by their authors for each new Dopamine release. If a favorite tweak from the iOS 13 days is the reason you want to jailbreak, check that a rootless version exists before you start.

Two housekeeping details from the 3.0.8 release notes are worth knowing. The "Remove Jailbreak" button is hidden on jailbroken devices because it was unreliable; to remove the jailbreak, you reboot and run the jailbreak again with the removal toggle switched on. And the "Hide Jailbreak" option, which some people use to get banking apps working, comes with the developer's explicit warning that it is at your own risk.

What Apple says the risks are, and what they mean in a shop

The risks of unauthorized modification of iOS are well known. A jailbreak removes security layers designed to protect your personal information, which can let malware or an attacker in. It can cause crashes and freezes, both of iOS and of apps, and loss of data. It can drain the battery faster, cause dropped calls and unreliable data connections, and make location data slower or wrong. It can break iCloud, iMessage and Apple Pay, and stop notifications reaching third-party apps. And some modifications can leave iOS so damaged that a later official update makes the phone permanently unusable.

The same page states that modifying iOS violates the iOS license agreement, and that Apple may deny service for a device that has had unauthorized software installed. In practice that means a jailbroken phone can be turned away from an Apple repair, even under warranty. Restoring the phone to stock iOS first is the usual way around that.

From the repair counter, Jake and Ethan add four practical risks of their own.

  1. Banking and payment apps. Many detect jailbreaks and refuse to open. Hiding the jailbreak sometimes works and sometimes gets an account flagged.
  2. Corporate and school phones. Device management usually detects jailbreaks and wipes or blocks the phone. Never jailbreak a phone that is not yours to modify.
  3. The update trap. To keep a jailbreak you must stay on an old iOS, which means skipping security fixes for months or years. That is the real cost, and it grows every month.
  4. Bad tweaks. Tweaks run with root. A tweak from an untrusted source can read anything on the phone. Stick to well-known repositories and authors.

Jake: "That third one is what I never knew how to explain."

Ethan: "Tell them this: to keep the jailbreak, you have to keep the phone's locks from a year ago. Every fix Apple ships after that, you do not get. For a spare phone, fine. For the phone with your bank and your photos on it, it is a bad trade."

In the United States, jailbreaking your own smartphone is legal. The Copyright Office has granted an exemption for it since 2010, under the rule that otherwise forbids getting around software protections, and renews it every three years; the current cycle took effect on October 28, 2024 and runs to October 2027. The exemption covers you modifying your own phone. It does not cover piracy: using a jailbroken phone to install paid apps without paying is still copyright infringement.

Legal does not mean supported. Apple treats jailbreaking as a breach of the license agreement, which is why it may refuse service, as above. Laws in other countries differ, and this is general information, not legal advice. If you are outside the US and it matters to you, check your own country's rules.

A jailbreak does not remove Activation Lock

This is the question behind a lot of the jailbreak searches that reach a repair shop, so it needs its own section. Activation Lock is the "This iPhone is linked to an Apple ID" screen that appears when Find My was on and the phone was erased. It is checked by Apple's servers when the phone activates, not stored somewhere on the phone that root access can change. A jailbreak changes what runs on the phone; it does not change what Apple's activation servers decide.

The legitimate ways through are simple and slow. If you bought the phone secondhand, the previous owner signs in at iCloud.com, erases the device, and removes it from their account; ask them to do this before you pay for any used iPhone. If you are the original owner and cannot sign in, Apple accepts Activation Lock removal requests with proof of purchase that shows the device's serial number or IMEI, and the device must not be in Lost Mode. There is no way to speed that up.

Anyone offering to remove Activation Lock for a fee, with an IMEI and nothing else, or "with a jailbreak", is either taking your money or dealing in stolen phones. A repair shop that does it is helping someone sell a phone that was taken from its owner.

Jake: "So when the guy with the Apple ID screen asks for a jailbreak, the answer is the receipt or the original owner."

Ethan: "Every time. And if he has neither, it is worth asking him where the phone came from."

What you can do without jailbreaking

Most of the reasons people jailbroke in 2015 are now built into iOS or available legally, and it is worth checking this list before you put a phone on an old iOS forever.

Customization. Home screen widgets, custom icon tints, Lock Screen widgets and layouts, Control Center you can rearrange, and Shortcuts automations cover most of what themes and launcher tweaks used to do.

Files. The Files app reads and writes local storage, USB drives and network shares. System files stay off limits, which is the point.

Apps Apple will not approve. This is where 2026 is genuinely different. In the European Union, in Japan since December 2025 and iOS 26.2, and in Brazil, Apple allows alternative app marketplaces. AltStore PAL, Epic Games Store and others install apps outside the App Store with no jailbreak, no app limit and no expiry. Apple still runs a lighter notarization check on those apps. Anywhere in the world, the original AltStore, called AltStore Classic, can sideload apps with your own Apple ID; it is limited to three apps, which expire after seven days unless refreshed, and it may need a computer.

Emulators and game streaming. Apple's App Store rules have allowed retro game emulators since 2024, and several are available there directly.

How to remove a jailbreak and go back to normal iOS

With checkra1n and palera1n, the simplest undo is built in: restart the phone without running the tool, and it boots as stock iOS. To remove the jailbreak's files as well, palera1n has a command to restore the root filesystem; check the current option on the official site. With Dopamine, reboot, open the app, switch on the removal toggle, and run it once more.

For a full clean slate, restore the phone with a computer: Finder on a Mac, or the Apple Devices app or iTunes on Windows, using Restore iPhone. That erases the phone and installs the latest iOS Apple is signing, which also means the jailbreak window for that phone is gone for good. Back up your photos and data first, and expect to set the phone up again. This is the state you want before sending a phone to Apple for repair.

So, should you jailbreak in 2026?

For your everyday phone, almost certainly not. The phone that holds your bank, your passwords, your photos and your two-factor codes should be on the latest iOS, and a jailbreak only works if it is not. The features most people wanted are built in now, and in the EU, Japan and Brazil, the main legitimate reason, installing apps Apple will not approve, no longer needs one.

For a spare phone, a different story. An old iPhone 8 or X kept for tinkering, learning how iOS works under the hood, running tweaks for fun, or security study is exactly what checkra1n, palera1n and Dopamine are good for. It has nothing on it to lose, and if something breaks, you restore it in ten minutes. That is the version of jailbreaking that is still worth doing, and it is a genuinely good way to learn.

Jake: "So my answer at the counter is: which phone, which iOS, and is it the phone with your life on it."

Ethan: "And if it is an iPhone 16 or anything on iOS 27, the answer is no, kindly, and please do not download anything that says otherwise. That last part protects them more than anything else on this page."

Jailbreak questions people ask, answered short

Can you jailbreak an iPhone in 2026?

Yes, older ones. The iPhone 5s through X can be jailbroken with checkra1n or palera1n on any iOS they run, and the iPhone XS through 15 Pro with Dopamine 3.0 on specific iOS 16, 17, 18 and 26.0 builds. The iPhone 16, 17 and 18 cannot.

Can iOS 26 be jailbroken?

Only iOS 26.0 and 26.0.1, and only on A12 and A13 iPads and the iPhone 11 and SE (2nd gen), with Dopamine 3.0. There is no jailbreak for iOS 26.1 or later on any iPhone.

Is there a jailbreak for iOS 27?

No public jailbreak exists for iOS 27 on any iPhone. Researchers have booted a modified iOS 27 on an iPhone 11 Pro with the usbliter8 hardware flaw, tethered to a computer and with core features broken; it is not a tool you can install.

What is the latest jailbreak for iOS?

Dopamine 3.0, released August 7, 2026, with 3.0.10 the current version. It is the newest public jailbreak and reaches iOS 18.7.1 and 26.0.1 on A12 and A13 devices and iOS 17.3.1 on A14 to A17.

Does checkra1n work on Windows?

No. checkra1n runs only on macOS and Linux, and a virtual machine on Windows does not work. On a Windows PC, boot palen1x from a USB drive made with Ventoy and run palera1n there.

What is the difference between checkra1n and palera1n?

Both use the checkm8 boot ROM flaw on A11 and older devices. checkra1n covers iOS 12 to 14 in practice and is rootful; palera1n covers iOS 15 and later, is actively maintained, and offers rootless or rootful.

Is checkra1n safe?

The real checkra1n from checkra.in is a well-known open project, but any jailbreak lowers your phone's security. Fake copies on look-alike domains, "checkra1n online" sites and Windows .exe files are not checkra1n and are the real danger.

Is checkra1n free?

Yes. checkra1n, palera1n and Dopamine are free. A site asking for payment, a survey or an app install to unlock a jailbreak is a scam.

Can I jailbreak an iPhone 16 or iPhone 17?
