December 2023 — Kali 2023.4, where this post began
Kali 2023.4 shipped in December 2023 with GNOME 45 as its headline desktop option and a batch of new tools — cabby, exiflooter, h8mail, ReconSpider among them. Late March 2024 — the xz-utils backdoor scare
A few months later, a backdoor was discovered in the xz-utils compression library — CVE-2024-3094, one of the most serious supply-chain incidents Linux has seen. Because Kali is rolling, machines that updated during a short window in late March 2024 briefly received the affected version before Kali pushed the fix. A machine sitting on stock 2023.4 that never updated was actually not exposed to that one — a rare case where being lazy about updates helped. April 2025 — Kali loses its signing key (the part that breaks your machine)
This is the big one, and it deserves a proper explanation because the error it causes looks scary and the cause sounds almost unbelievable.
Every package Kali publishes is cryptographically signed, and your machine keeps the matching public key in a small file called a keyring — literally a ring of trusted keys, stored at /usr/share/keyrings/kali-archive-keyring.gpg. When apt update runs, it checks the repository's signature against that keyring before trusting anything.
In April 2025, the Kali team announced they had lost access to their repository signing key. Not stolen, not compromised — lost. They froze the repository (from Friday, April 18, 2025), generated a fresh key, and re-signed everything with it. The consequence: a new key cannot announce itself through the very channel it signs. Every Kali installed before the switch — every 2023.4, 2024.x, and early-2025 machine on Earth — fails its next apt update with:

And the replacement is safe to trust because you fetch it over HTTPS directly from archive.kali.org, Kali's own server, and its fingerprint is published on kali.org where you can compare it character by character. That is exactly how the security model is designed to recover.
2025 — signature checking gets stricter
Around the same period, Kali's apt moved to a stricter, modern signature verifier called sqv (from the Sequoia-PGP project). Two practical effects for you. First, signature problems on newer installs show up as "Sub-process /usr/bin/sqv returned an error code" rather than the classic gpg wording — different costume, same category of problem, same keyring fix. Second, sqv is strict about key expiry dates: Kali's keys carry expiry dates that get extended periodically, so even a healthy install that sleeps in a drawer for a year can wake up to a signature error simply because its copy of the key expired. Once again: refresh the keyring file, and it clears.
2026 — a faster Kali, a new sources format, kernel 6.19
The current release, Kali 2026.2 (end of June 2026), is what your upgrade lands on. Step 0 — confirm what you are actually running
Open a terminal (press Ctrl + Alt + T) and run grep VERSION /etc/os-release. Whatever number it prints — 2023.4, 2022.1, anything — the steps below are the same. Step 1 — install the new archive keyring
Required on anything installed before April 2025; harmless on anything newer, so when in doubt, run it:

Three things worth knowing about that line. apt update refreshes the list of what exists — it installs nothing. full-upgrade (rather than plain upgrade) is the correct verb for a jump this size: it is allowed to remove or replace packages when the last two-plus years of changes demand it, which plain upgrade is not — plain upgrade would leave you half-migrated. Step 4 — answer the prompts sensibly
A jump across years will pause you two or three times mid-install. The two prompts you will actually meet:
"A new version of configuration file X is available... keep your currently-installed version?" — if you never hand-edited that file (for most people, that is every file), take the package maintainer's new version. If it is a file you customized and care about, keep yours. When you have no idea, the safe default apt highlights is fine — that is what it is for.
"Restart services during package upgrades without asking?" — Yes. On a desktop or lab machine there is nothing running that a service restart can hurt.
Step 5 — reboot and verify
Run sudo reboot. A big upgrade replaces the kernel — the core of the operating system — and the new one only takes over on the next boot. After logging back in, run grep VERSION /etc/os-release again: it should now say 2026.2. Finish with sudo apt autoremove -y to sweep out packages the old system needed and the new one does not — after a multi-year jump this routinely frees a gigabyte or more.
✅ Upgrade first — reinstall only on evidence
People love to declare that old installs "should just be reinstalled." For a 2023.4 machine that is simply wrong as a default: the rolling upgrade is designed for exactly this, it preserves your files, tools, and settings, and it costs one command. Some package versions on your old system conflict with what current Kali wants — common when third-party tools were installed outside apt years ago. Run sudo apt --fix-broken install, then retry the full-upgrade. If one specific package keeps blocking, removing it (sudo apt remove packagename), upgrading, and reinstalling it afterwards is quicker than fighting it.
The disk filled up mid-upgrade
Apt stores every downloaded package before installing, so a multi-gigabyte jump can choke a small disk. Run sudo apt clean to empty the download cache, sudo apt autoremove -y to drop obsolete packages, check with df -h /, and resume. The terminal looks wrong after the upgrade
